71-90 Litres

Kelty Coyote 80 Review

Kelty Coyote 80 is a top loading internal frame backpack with a capacity of 80 litres (4900 cubic inches). The Coyote 80 weighs 5 pounds 5 ounces (2.4 kg) and its packed dimensions are 32 inches by 15 inches by 15 inches (81 cm by 38 cm by 38 cm).

This backpack comes in two different sizes. The small/medium size has a variable length back ranging from 14.5 to 18.5 inches (37 to 47 cm). The medium/large also has a variable length back which ranges from 17.5 to 21 inches (44 to 53 cm). The Kelty Coyote 80 is covered by a lifetime warranty against workmanship and materials defects.

The top compartment of the Kelty Coyote 80 comes off as a separate day pack. This is a very nice feature as it entitles one to leave the large pack in the tent and roam around with a smaller bag. The Coyote 80 is very highly rated on Amazon.com and the current rating is an impressive 4.7 out of 5 stars.

Kelty Coyote 80 According to one reviewer, one of the advantages of the Coyote 80 over other backpacks is the addition of a number of pockets. The guy also states that the addition of two small mesh pockets on the waist band is a great addition, a feature that is normally missing in many other large backpacks. Small objects that are used often can be placed in these pockets thus saving one the hassle of having to remove the backpack from the back.

Another man wrote that he likes the big side pockets on the bag. Having said this, the guy said that these pockets are not really accessible unless one removes the backpack from the back. So in order to get some items from the side pockets a little assistance from a hiking companion would be required.

Kelty Coyote 80 Waist Band Pockets

In the opinion of this reviewer, the two rows of straps along the bottom of the backpack are very handy as it allows one to hang other objects to the backpack. He also wrote that the Coyote 80 is very well made and the stitching looks very good. However the man wrote that while the pockets on the waistband are very handy, he would have preferred if they were a bit bigger and made of a more robust material instead of mesh.

According to another reviewer, the Kelty Coyote 80 is a great backpack that can fit men and women of various heights. The guy is 6 feet 2 inches tall (1.88 m) and the pack fits him very nicely. However the man stated that the backpack also fits his friend who is 4 inches (10 cm) taller than him.

Kelty Coyote 80 Backside

A man wrote that he has used the backpack on long journeys of more than 30 miles (48 km) long that took 2 to 5 days each. The guy said that he had 55 pounds (25 kg) of weight in his Coyote 80 but it still performed beautifully and the weight did not hurt him.

Apparently, the Kelty Coyote 80 is capable of handling much larger weights. As a matter of fact, a man stated that he carried 70 to 85 pounds of weight in his Coyote 80 while on a 12 day mountaineering excursion. The man stated that the chest strap did not hold in place under all that weight but apart from that he did not have any other issues.

On the negative side is the lack of access to the bottom of the pack. Reviewers have commented that in order to get the sleeping back from the bottom of the bag, it would be necessary to get everything out of the bag. The possibility of accessing the bottom panel by means of a dedicated zipper is a feature included in several backpacks, so if one wants such a feature at all costs, the Kelty Coyote 80 is not the backpack to consider. According to another reviewer, weight is also a factor to take into consideration since at 2.4 kg this is not the lightest of backpacks
